congratulations for extracting a copy of »wCNews« =:-> I hope the
installation of this package will be a lot easier, at least compared to
the alpha release of »wCNews« ...
Some hints on how to set up the stuff:
18.Perv:wail/CNews> list dist
Directory "dist" on Friday 18-Dec-92
notebook Dir ----rwed Yesterday 23:03:09
news Dir ----rwed 18-Oct-92 03:44:18
: SIMULATION of `UUNEWS:'
doc Dir ----rwed Today 01:48:02
man Dir ----rwed Today 01:47:54
bin Dir ----rwed Today 01:47:59
: The executables needed by Amiga CNews (move 'em into `uucp:c')
lib Dir ----rwed Today 00:52:11
: SIMULATION of `UULIB:'
6 directories - 6 blocks used
The directories »notebook«, »doc«, and »man« contain various manual
pages; most documentation for the supplied programs are stored in »man«.
Information on how (the original) CNews works internally can be found in
»notebook«; »doc« finally contains miscellaneous documentations.
»news« should be copied to »UUNEWS:« (»copy news uunews: all clone«);
in »wCNews«, incoming news are stored in »UUNEWS:in.coming/« by »rnews«
and feed into »relaynews« by executing »unbatch«, usually per dcron on a
regular basis. Outgoing news are listed in »UUNEWS:out.going/site/togo« --
THUS FOR EACH site YOU INTEND TO SEND NEWS TO (i. e. almost every site
that has an entry in UULIB:news/sys), YOU NEED TO CREATE A SUBDIRECTORY IN
»UUNEWS:out.going/« AS »relaynews« WILL COMPLAIN OTHERWISE. Eventually, a
later revision will include script to address this, but for now, it's up
to you.
The files in »lib«, especially the »lib/bin« subdirectory, are
expected to be moved to »UULIB:«. DO NOT, REPEAT NOT, SIMPLY »copy lib
uulib: all clone«! »lib« CONTAINS IMPORTANT CONFIGURATION FILES WHICH,
WHEN SIMPLY COPIED, WILL OVERWRITE YOURS, WHICH USUALLY RESULTS IN *BIG*
TROUBLE! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
NOTE: You don't need to put »UULIB:news/bin« into your search path; but
»newscontrol« and scripts for handling control messages HAVE TO reside
there.
Finally, the files in »bin« are intended to go to »UUCP:c« -- or to
anywhere else as long as that place is in your global DOS search path.
»relaynews« and company EXPECT several programs residing somewhere along
current DOS path, there is NO WAY to specify alternatives yet.
NOTE: If you call »unbatch« from your crontab, when starting »dcron«, the
path ALREADY has to contain the place where you have stored the UUCP
binaries (usually »UUCP:c/«) and also the ones of »wCNews« (here:
»UUCP:c«, too =:->).
Regarding the files in »contrib«: I got several requests for this
stuff, so I finally decided to include them with the `wCNews'
distribution. See sample scripts for handling of (new|rm)group messages ...
Please note that the included `uux' and `uuxqt' are still preliminary
versions, based on 1.15 sources; they work for me, but you have been
warned =:-> `uuxqt' checks the sending system in incoming uucp jobs with
the L.sys-file, thus you NEED to add an entry for EVERY host that shall be
allowed to send you jobs -- otherwise, the will be REJECTED.
In case of problems feel free to drop me a note; hopefully, there
will be a newsgroup »alt.sys.amiga.cnews« be the end of 1992 ... I also
monitor »alt.sys.amiga.uucp« and the german groups
»de.comp.sys.amiga.uucp« and »amiga.uucp«, choose what ever is
appropriate.
I also included two scripts (in »bin«), »bugreport« and
»featurerequest« which should be used for reporting bugs or asking for
features, respectively. The are able to either email or post your message
-- for email, use <bugs@hactar.hanse.de>, for posting, use one of the
above groups.
18.Perv:wail/CNews> bugreport
Usage: bugreport programm receipient_or_newsgroup [post]
quit failed returncode 10
18.Perv:wail/CNews> featurerequest
Usage: featurerequest programm receipient_or_newsgroup [post]
quit failed returncode 10
Please use »wCNews« for »programm«, otherwise your report/request may be
directed to the wrong place (I'm also developing a new sendmail and other
stuff, thus specifying the program IS vital).
The reason for using the scripts is: I monitor both the traffic to
<bugs@hactar.hanse.de> and the newsgroups »alt.sys.amiga.cnews«, »alt.sys.-
amiga.uucp«, »de.comp.sys.amiga.uucp«, and »amiga.uucp« with my »BugReport«
program which scans each mail/posting and, if it looks like a script-
generated one, it is filed in a separate directory here, for later
reference ...
One final note: I have received at least three bug reports of
»relaynews« filing a new article locally but not transmitting it to
neighbouring sites. I'm not sure whether this bug was introduced by me or
already existed in the original sources -- only two of the three poeple
complaining about this were running my enhanced version ...
Until this bug has been found, please MAKE SURE that you specify a
COMPLETE »ME:...« line in »uulib:news/sys«, i. e. DO NOT USE
# This is the sys file of wCNews ...
ME:all/all
but write
# This is the sys file of wCNews ...
ME:all/all:F:
instead. Although the former syntax is expected to be correct, in all
known cases the problems vanished after changing the `ME' line into the
latter form ...
Hope this was helpful to you ... If you want to send me something (be-
cause this stuff works so great you never expected, for example =:->), feel
free to do so =;->
Amiga UUCP Plus USERS, NOTE: DO NOT, REPEAT NOT, RUN EXPIRE WITH YOUR
OLD HISTORY FILE IN PLACE. AUUCP'S HISTORY IS OFF BY 8 YEARS -- YOU CAN
IMAGINE WHAT THIS WOULD MEAN TO YOUR NEWSTREE, CAN'T YOU?
Please do the following: »rename uulib:news/history uulib:news/tmphistory«,
»fixauucphistory <uulib:news/tmphistory >uulib:news/history« and finally
run »doexpire«. DO THIS BEFORE RUNNING THE NEW »relaynews« THE FIRST TIME!
Thanks go to Frank 'Crash' Edwards (who did the original port),
Walter Mildenberger, Ingo Feulner, Matthew Dillon -- and all I have
forgotten.
